ââ¬ÅOh, The Happy I Have Found In My Nappy.ââ¬Â. Since I Began
ââ¬Å"Oh, the happy I have found in my nappy.â⬠Since I began my natural hair journey I am persistently overshadowed with a multitude of confused stares from strangers in public, and unfiltered conversations from Black men and women pertaining to my decision to be ââ¬Å"Naturalâ⬠. Those experiences launched my curiosity about the politics of Black womenââ¬â¢s natural hair in America. Instead of considering that Black women who opt to wear their natural hair may have begun a journey to true acceptance of themselves, they are shunned upon for not conforming to Societyââ¬â¢s westernized standards of beauty. Thus, Black womenââ¬â¢s natural hair are identified as employing a form of resistance to our cultural history of oppression. Throughout this essay, I willâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Walker strongly encouraged Black women to free themselves of being economically reliant on White people as well as Black men. Walker used hair as a tool to reconstruct a new identity for Black women to become their own boss, and to have the option to control their capital. Rooks uses Walkerââ¬â¢s experiences with the media as an explanation on how the misrepresentation of beauty for African American women was originated. The second book I will discuss is Hair Matters: Beauty, Power, and Black Womenââ¬â¢s Consciousness by Ingrid Banks which was created to explain the relationship between black womenââ¬â¢s hair and how it relates to their cultural identity. Banks takes on an analytical approach in her ethnographic research on 61 Black women of various ages, and provided a platform for informal discourse on the politics of Black womenââ¬â¢s hair in America. The inspiration behind Hair Matters was launched during November 1998, when Ruth Sherman a White teacher at a predominantly Hispanic and Black public school supplied her third-grade students with a childrenââ¬â¢s book written by Carolivia Herron titled ââ¬Å"Nappy Hairâ⬠. The book was about a child of color embracing her hair texture, however the incident caused national attention and received a multitude of backlash. Edgar Allan Poe Essays (2764 words) - Edgar Allan Poe, Literature
Edgar Allan Poe For some class on some date with some professor The Influence of Family and Friends on Poe Over the course of Poe's forty year stay on Earth, he was exposed early to several key people who would have a profound impact on his writings. Though this idea in and of itself is not uncommon in literature, for Poe it went far beyond being merely influenced. Beginning at age 3 when he lost his parents, Poe was subjected to a difficult life that would later play heavily in his works. Between his foster father (John Allan), his first love (Sarah Elmis Royster) and his young first wife (Virginia Cleem), Poe's contacts largely dictated his works. How was it that such an obviously brilliant individual like Poe allowed himself to be mentally manipulated by these people? To answer this question, it is necessary to take a step back and first get a little background. Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1809 to two struggling actors, David and Elizabeth Poe. When his father died at the age of 36, Edgar was left alone with his pregnant mother. He traveled with his mother and sister from theater to theater, often sleeping backstage. When his mother died of tuberculosis on December 11, 1811 at the young age of 24, Edgar and his sister, Rosalie, were orphaned. Edgar was only two years old. His sister was sent to live with a Mrs. Mackenzie when she was one, Edgar went to live with John and Frances Allen. Edgar's older brother William, was already living with their grandfather, David Poe, Sr., because at the time of his birth, David and Elizabeth could not afford to care for him. Edgar moved to Richmond, Virginia with the Allan's, where he had many luxuries that he had never had before. He had his own bedroom in the apartment above John Allen's store, Ellis & Allen, and even servants to help him wash before bed and put away his clothes. Growing up, Edgar never got along with his foster father, often arguing with him, and rarely showing any affection. John Allen once even described his son as "miserable, sulky, and ill-tempered". There was also the matter of Edgar's alcoholism, which brought shame upon his foster family and friends. Even his beloved first fiancee Sarah Elmira Royster, eventually refused to see him, because of his drinking habits. One night after a particularly bitter argument with Mr. Allen, he decided to leave his home and go to Boston. Boston was only the short term answer and soon Poe was disillusioned with the city. After an unpleasant month in Boston, Edgar was once again on the road. After having a few poems published and withdrawing from a military academy he eventually wound up in Baltimore, Maryland, penniless. He soon found that his relatives there were as poor as he was. Even so, they welcomed him into their homes and hearts. He stayed for a while in the home of his aunt, Maria Clemm. Also living with Mrs. Clemm were her two children, Henry, 13, and Virginia; Poe's cousin and future wife. In addition, his paralyzed grandmother and his dying brother William, 24 also resided there. He tried unsuccessfully to get a job at several newspapers, before seeing a contest for the best short story in the local paper. Being rather poor, Poe proceeded writing short stories in attempt to win the $100 winners' prize. Even though he did not win the $100 for his efforts, Poe did have some of the stories published in the years to come, but he never had anything to show for it , because the newspaper did not give him credit for writing the stories. Poe was offered a job back in Richmond, and he had to leave Baltimore(and worse, Virginia, with whom he had fallen in love) to take the job. He rapidly fell into depression while in Richmond over the absence of his beloved Virginia and was driven once again to drinking. . Poe's drinking had gotten out of hand and he was fired. He went back to Baltimore on the spot and asked for Virginia's hand in marriage. They got married a year later. Soon after he was wed, he was re-offered the job in Richmond, but only if he promised to never drink again. He promised to never let another sip of liquor pass his lips, and went to Richmond, this time taking Virginia and his aunt Maria. This would prove to be the high point of

A Proposal on the Negative Implications of Social Networking in the Research Paper
A Proposal on the Negative Implications of Social Networking in the 21st Century - Research Paper Example Ethics and wellbeing of the people in the society is a very important aspect that should be considered by everyone. Societal evils lower the quality of life while presenting individuals to harm. In the earlier days, harm was inflicted on individuals mainly physically, however, with the invention of computer technologies, there has been a paradigm. In the modern context, people can effectively communicate through the social networks and engage in many ways through this virtual mode. Despite the ability to transact positive deeds, malicious individuals, and groups have used social networking as a mode of gaining an advantage over others. Such evils have happened not only been directed to individuals but also to businesses and other organizations, including government agencies.Ã In the recent past, media reports have indicated that social networks have become one of the main platforms for executing cybercrime.Ã This is based on the view that social networking is a recent technolog y that is now attracting interest. This forms the basis for developing a research proposal in order to have a study that conclusively draws findings on the negative influence of social media o the society today. In addition, it is also apparent that social networking has not reached its maximum growth, this means that as the networks continue to develop, so are the associated evils; hence, it is likely that so an all networking evils will have a bigger impact in the society if they are not addressed through research.Ã

Frankeinstein book Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Frankeinstein book - Essay Example However, one obvious reading of the character of Victor is viewing Victor as a neglectful parent who abandons his progeny the moment its born. The many apparent examples in the novel point to the same fact and it is the poor ââ¬Å"parentingâ⬠of his progeny which lead to his creationââ¬â¢s thirst for the vindication of his unjust life resulting in the most tragic events in the novel. It is also notable that the novelistââ¬â¢s personal child nurturing experiences, about the practice of parenting, have been significant contributor to the relationship between Victor and the creature. The birth of the monster, the ââ¬Å"prestigiousâ⬠child of Frankenstein does not bring any kind of joy to him, but he is very much thwarted and incredibly repulsed by the disgusting and abnormal physical appearance of his creation. Therefore, the description of the much expected and cherished-for birth of the child, i.e. the monster, reflects the attitude of the parent in Victor. ââ¬Å"I saw the full yellow eye of the creature open: it breathed hard and a convulsive motion agitated its limbs.â⬠(Shelley 1961). Victor escapes from the newborn when it follows him and he admits that the child was a mistake or an accident, abandoning the child completely along with his parental responsibility. Victor neglects and abuses his creation and even expresses his wish that it died. ââ¬Å"I gnashed my teeth, my eyes became inflamed, and I ardently wished to extinguish that life which I had so thoughtlessly bestowed.â⬠(Shelley 1961). The hatred that the monster develops toward the ââ¬Ëparentââ¬â¢ is the result of the parenthood of Victor who as a neglectful parent abandons his progeny the moment it is born. A. The classic novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is particularly noted for the treatment of the advancements in the scientific field and the consequences of man trying to
