A few years back,  a student  with whom I had done a handful of SAT tutoring sessions asked me to help him with his college essay.   He was applying to a number of very selective schools, and while  he was a solid, highly motivated candidate with excellent grades and recommendations, his scores were strong but not amazing. He did have a hook, but he was by no means a shoo-in. And since he wanted to go to medical school eventually, financial aid was also a consideration.  The essay  could be a real tip factor for him. Understandably, he wanted it to be great. Luckily, he had a clear and very good idea for a topic from the start, and we spent several weeks going back and forth with drafts, comments, etc. The usual.  We hit the usual bumps and  organizational issues, but all in all, it was pretty straightforward.  When my student got stuck, Id get him to just talk it out, and then  let him take that material and mold  it into something more coherent. After a few weeks, my student ended up with what I considered a very good  piece. He was, however,  still nervous, not to mention still reeling slightly  from what seemed to him like the inordinate  amount of time necessary  to hammer out barely 500 words. R., I said, believe it or not, your essay was  easy compared to some of what Ive gone through. You started with a good, original  topic that was genuinely representative of your interests; you stuck to that topic; and you developed it in a very interesting and effective way. Your friends are  the ones who listen to you day in and day out, and theyre  the ones best able to judge whether your writing sounds like the person they know without getting overly concerned about whether youve written what they imagine admissions officers want to hear. No, you dont want to include anything that would raise red flags, but  that should be a separate consideration from whether your essay sounds like you wrote it.   Presumably, your friends like you for a reason. If you can convey some of the qualities that make people want to spend time with you in your essay, theres a decent chance the admissions officer reading it will find you appealing as a human being as well. That person will have a list of your grades and scores and extracurriculars right there; your essay is there to show something about  the  person behind those statistics.   Think about it this way: admissions officers are people. They have thousands literally, thousands of applications to get through in a fairly short period of time, and things can get pretty tedious after a while. Most college essays tend to sound pretty alike. (Trust, me Ive read enough of them to know). I think its pretty safe to say that most readers  want nothing more than to come across an essay that distracts them from the drudgery of what theyre doing; that genuinely  entertains them for a few minutes; that makes them stop skimming and start really  reading. Though this idea in and of itself is not uncommon in literature, for Poe it went far beyond being merely influenced. Beginning at age 3 when he lost his parents, Poe was subjected to a difficult life that would later play heavily in his works. Between his foster father (John Allan), his first love (Sarah Elmis Royster) and his young first wife (Virginia Cleem), Poe's contacts largely dictated his works. How was it that such an obviously brilliant individual like Poe allowed himself to be mentally manipulated by these people? To answer this question, it is necessary to take a step back and first get a little background. Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1809 to two struggling actors, David and Elizabeth Poe. When his father died at the age of 36, Edgar was left alone with his pregnant mother. He traveled with his mother and sister from theater to theater, often sleeping backstage. When his mother died of tuberculosis on December 11, 1811 at the young age of 24, Edgar and his sister, Rosalie, were orphaned. Edgar was only two years old. His sister was sent to live with a Mrs. Mackenzie when she was one, Edgar went to live with John and Frances Allen. Edgar's older brother William, was already living with their grandfather, David Poe, Sr., because at the time of his birth, David and Elizabeth could not afford to care for him. Edgar moved to Richmond, Virginia with the Allan's, where he had many luxuries that he had never had before. He had his own bedroom in the apartment above John Allen's store, Ellis & Allen, and even servants to help him wash before bed and put away his clothes. Growing up, Edgar never got along with his foster father, often arguing with him, and rarely showing any affection. John Allen once even described his son as "miserable, sulky, and ill-tempered". One night after a particularly bitter argument with Mr. Allen, he decided to leave his home and go to Boston. Boston was only the short term answer and soon Poe was disillusioned with the city. After an unpleasant month in Boston, Edgar was once again on the road. After having a few poems published and withdrawing from a military academy he eventually wound up in Baltimore, Maryland, penniless. He soon found that his relatives there were as poor as he was. Even so, they welcomed him into their homes and hearts. He stayed for a while in the home of his aunt, Maria Clemm. Also living with Mrs. Clemm were her two children, Henry, 13, and Virginia; Poe's cousin and future wife. In addition, his paralyzed grandmother and his dying brother William, 24 also resided there. He tried unsuccessfully to get a job at several newspapers, before seeing a contest for the best short story in the local paper. Being rather poor, Poe proceeded writing short stories in attempt to win the $100 winners' prize. Even though he did not win the $100 for his efforts, Poe did have some of the stories published in the years to come, but he never had anything to show for it , because the newspaper did not give him credit for writing the stories. Here in this report, we will look into the issue of racial discrimination in Singapore. What causes the individuals here to feel alienated or under-represented? Is there any possibility of us rising above the differences and appreciate them for what they are? Will the differences become transparent? How the government ensures that the minorities here are given equality with the rest? How did the government handle such situations? Have the government put in enough effort to handle these racial tensions? Introduction: Singapore, a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society where all individual are given free reign to practice the religion of their choice. Four major racial groups will be Chinese, Malays, Indians and Eurasians. Therefore, to prevent any racial discrimination between the four groups, the government has made conscious effort in ensuring that the different ethnic groups in Singapore are equally represented. One big hurdle will be to achieve racial harmony between ethnic groups, encourage individuals to foster respect, understanding and acceptance of cultures within ones society. Some minorities has raise the issue of feeling alienated by the society and that the government has not done enough to reduce such issue. Still, through the recent survey, the majority of Singaporeans think of themselves more as citizens of Singapore than the race they are. This applies equally to all the three larger racial groups: Chinese, Malays and Indians. The strong national identity has still remained important within us and majority support Singapore to have a multi-racial society which allows for ethnicity and representation of ethnic identity. Social Integration cannot be achieved by holding a campaign or relying on the government implementation. It has to come from individual effort. Even though that there is a slight issue within these ethnic groups, we are still united and strong and able to fight against any destruction to protect our own nation. The recent SARs crisis, Fabric of Nation and National Day has definitely showed the strong bond between these four ethnic groups.

Remarque accurately depicts both the physical and mental repercussions of war. All Quiet on the Western Front should be read by all members of the Armed Forces for several reasons. First, the novel describes in detail the worst case scenarios associated with war. By being exposed to such a portrayal of war, unprepared citizens would be able to make better decisions regarding enlisting. Second, those citizens who do decide to enlist would be better prepared mentally for the mental horrors that occur after war. Finally, All Quiet on the Western Front sets a standard for the patriotism needed to serve one’s country and the consequential honor that comes with that patriotism. Perhaps the biggest argument for not mandating the reading of All Quiet on the Western Front is the possible decline in enlisting in the Armed Forces. Such an argument is moot, though. All Quiet merely depicts war as it actually is. In All Quiet, Remarque describes a moment of war by writing, â€Å"Everywhere wire-cutters are snapping, planks are thrown across the entanglements. . . the earth shudders, it crashes, smokes, and groans, we stumble over slippery lumps of flesh, over yielding bodies† (Remarque 117). The possibility of war is manifest in the duties of the military. Gulf War Veteran Alan Parks asserts, â€Å"If a man is going to be deterred from the military by the occurrences of war, he is not the type of man [one] would want defending [one’s country]† (Parks). By reading All Quiet ... ... feels after a war by saying, â€Å"While in the ‘spotlight,’ it is the single greatest feeling anyone could ever imagine† (Parks). Erich Maria Remarque’s novel All Quiet on the Western Front accurately describes both the horrors and honors of war. If the Armed Forces would require this novel to be read, more men would be better prepared for the feelings that await them in the military. By telling of the negative aspects of war, Remarque’s novel could successfully weed out those whom the army does not suit. By telling of the positive aspects of war, Remarque’s novel could encourage more men to join the military.
