Multicultural Topic Presentation Counseling Transgender Students By Sophia Henry What is transgender Transgender or Trans- According to the dictionary ?transgender mean noting or relating to a person whose gender identity does not correspond to that person?s biological sex assigned at birth. A person must self identify themselves as a transgender person in order for the term to be used correctly?. Transsexual- ?is a person who emotionally and psychologically feels that they belong to the opposite sex? (dictionary).Transsexual can also be referred as a person who has undergone sex reassignment surgery. Important Terms Gender- ?either the male or female division of a species, especially as differentiated by social and cultural roles and behavior? (dictionary). Gender Identity- ?a person s inner sense of being male or female, usually developed during early childhood as a result of parental rearing practices and societal influences and strengthened during puberty by hormonal changes? (dictionary). Transphobia- Attitudes or feelings towards transgender people also unreasoning hostility, aversion, harassment. Etc. Gender binary- The belief that everyone is either male or female. Only one type of gender system. Gender expression- ?refers to the ways in which we each manifest masculinity or femininity. Each of us expresses a particular gender every day, by the way we style our hair, select our clothing, or even the way we stand? (gill foundation).
